When I develop strategies I always find it useful to see what is going on on the chart. For example, if I were using moving averages in my calculations, I would like to see the moving averages plotted on the chart.
If you try and use the plot statement in a strategy you will get an error. You could create an indicator that plots the values that you are interested in, but then you have to be very careful the the inputs in the indicator correspond with those in the strategy, especially if you do an optimization (although you could use the Global Dictionary to automatically make sure the relevant inputs are applied to both programs).
There is, however, a simple way of ‘plotting’ lines on a chart within a strategy and that is by using the drawing tools. I demonstrate how to do this in the following short video. I also explain that using drawing objects like this can be very computer processor intensive and therefore it is a good idea to turn off the drawing objects when you don’t need them (such as when optimizing).
